Phone Script:
Hi my name is ______(give name) _________ I live in ___(give town/city)_____________. I am calling to express my support for New York moving forward with natural gas development in New York State. I am a landowner within the Marcellus Shale. Natural gas development provides New York with an opportunity to create thousands of new jobs – Pennsylvania will create nearly 90,000 jobs in the gas industry this year. Why not NY? We need the energy supply as well. Coal and oil are dirty energy sources and are polluting our water, air and lands. We have the natural gas. Lets stop importing energy from other states or worse other countries. I strongly oppose any efforts to enact a moratorium on natural gas development in New York State. Let the DEC issue its final SGEIS and let the state move forward in permitting natural gas drilling – with what will be the strictest environmental regulations in the world.
I hope that the Senator (or Assemblymember) will oppose any legislation to further delay natural gas development and the creation of new jobs in NY. Thank you.
Additional talking points:
Natural Gas is here, its clean and its ours. New York State needs the economic benefits and the jobs – nearly 90,000 gas industry jobs in PA in 2010. Why not in NY? Over $8 billion was added to the PA economy, including billions in new leasing, why not us? Instead NY has a $9 billion deficit. We are going in the wrong direction. Nearly $1 billion in state and local tax revenues are generated from the Marcellus industry in PA – it could and should be us. Instead we close down our parks system because we can’t find a couple of million dollars to keep them open. New Yorkers are out of work, over taxed and tired of economic opportunities being ignored or rejected. The Department of Environmental Conservation, Department of Health, Public Service Commission, NYSERDA and the legislature have been looking at the Marcellus for two years while development has been stopped in NY. Its time to implement the DEC recommendations and get New Yorkers in the Southeren Tier back to work. Any further delay or moratorium would show all industries that they are not welcome in NY.
